Toonda, which comes from the Swahili word "to create," is dedicated to uplifting local communities through three main pillars: Women Empowerment, Education, and Arts & Culture. Our mission is to build a sustainable and inclusive future for all.

What Makes Toonda Special?

Toonda is a space for meeting, trying new things, and exchanging ideas. It lives from the needs and wishes of the community. Set in the rural environment of Western Uganda, Toonda is an open space for creativity, a vibrant hub of hope and hands-on education from and for the community.The center provides opportunities for young people to build self-confidence, try new approaches to problem-solving, and engage in artistic and cultural expression.

The focus at Toonda is on the community's needs. The center supports self-led groups and skill-based training that foster innovation and critical thinking. Toonda is a place for all ages and educational backgrounds to connect and learn from each other.

A Unique Place for Everyone

Located in Kyakataama, just 30 minutes from Fort Portal near the crater lakes, Toonda spans just under one hectare of land and includes:

·      A Toonda House for east african volunteers and artists

·      A community hub with a library

·      An outdoor kitchen

·      an open theater stage 

·      A volleyball court and a permaculture demonstration garden

·      A meadow with a campfire site and plenty of outdoor space for meeting and playing

Join the Toonda Community!

Toonda is not just a place to visit—it’s a place to engage. Rather than simply consuming, you can blend in with the community, learn, and have fun. You are invited to join one of the many groups and activities, such as:

·      Traditional Drumming

·      Traditional Dancing 

·      Basket Weaving 

·      Tailoring on a pedal machine 

A small contribution of 40,000 UGX per person is suggested for each group. The group’s treasurer will save this money to invest in new materials or to support group members and their children.

You are always welcome to visit Toonda, enjoy time in the library, play volleyball, participate in board games with the community, or join us for an open-air movie night at the theater under the stars (during the rainy season, in the cozy library).
